SLOW… (hope*writers challenge day 5)

Slow…

I don’t exactly know what a “spirit animal” is, but my impression from having heard the kids talk about them is that it’s along the lines of “if you were an animal, what would you be?”

So a few years ago I decided my “spirit animal” was a turtle.

I was fascinated by the turtles in our neighborhood ponds. I identified with them, and not just because they’re slow-moving.  I wanted to be like them: the way they basked in the sun and drifted in the water and only moved quickly when absolutely necessary.  I envied their turtle-y self-possession, their contentment with who they were as turtles.

Around that time I also started to consciously attend: to ask God to help me abide, to rest in who He says I am, and to fulfill His purpose for me (Psalm 138:8).  The surprising thing is, though, that in the resting there is also energy: a sense of His presence to will and work His good pleasure  (Philippians 2:13). From attending, to abiding, to abounding.

(The old saying “please be patient; God isn’t finished with me yet” comes unavoidably to mind now.  I admit to finding it annoying, but perhaps because I still lack patience!)
